When you buy items online, it's mandatory that you give some personal information and that's where the potential for fraud or identitiy theft arises. There are stringent laws on the books which prohibit the sale of personal information to third parties, but it's up to you to research by reading reviews of their reliability and service. Even so, there is the possibility of their web site being hacked and your info being stolen.

In order to avoid surprises, you should always check the total cost of the items you buy. This includes shipping costs and any applicable taxes. If the shipping cost is hidden or very difficult to find, be sure to look for it and count it into the total cost.

A good barometer of a company's honesty is their willingness to replace unsuitable or damaged goods. If they don't have a generous return policy, you'll know to shop elsewhere.

If you receive any emails from that company asking you to update or add to your personal account profile, it's a good bet that their files have been compromised and that you are being subjected to a "phishing scam". This is not the fault of the company, but you should never open or reply to these emails, just close them and go to the company's official site and report it.
